Why Do I Work With Women?
As a CPA, a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional, and a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® professional, I could help divorcing men just as well as I help divorcing women. And sometimes I do have men as clients.
But my specialty, my focus, is on women. Divorcing women.
Why is that?
Why have I effectively chosen to cut my addressable market in half? And how does all of this factor into my helping you and your practice?
Women are different
It’s not politically correct to say this these days, but women are different from men. I know. I’m a woman. And when it comes to high-asset divorces, the differences typically grow stark.
In my experience dealing with, say, a dissolving marriage that had lasted for 20-odd years, where the woman was a stay-at-home mom and the husband was financially successful, there are certain roles that are played. Even if the wife had helped with household budgeting and paying the bills, she’s far less likely to have handled more complex financial topics like taxes and investment strategies.
In other words, the women in these situations need my help more than the men do.
I’m here to help them level the playing field. Sure, they can understand when their husband gets a bonus, but what about things like an RSU, stock options, or deferred compensation? Fact is, when women are unsure about how to make the right decision—understandably so, in cases like these—they tend to make no decision.
And this is where my help, helps you.
Tough nuts to crack
Women who are less financially sophisticated tend to be clients who go through the process more slowly. Who need more hand-holding, even for understanding basic things such as the difference between an IRA and a 401(k).
Unlike you, I have the luxury of time. You can’t—you wouldn’t—charge them for “hand-holding.” You need to move your case load ahead.
Not only do I hold these women’s hands, but I really help. I’m a woman. I’ve been divorced. I’m a financial pro. So I can move them along, helping you to move their cases along.
Another difference: Unlike you, I continue working with them, post-divorce—the financial issues of which are often a rude awakening for these women. (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain just how much time and money it will take to, say, turn a QDRO agreement into funds in their own name that they can use for their own purposes.) So I can help them address their fears and concerns, and come out in a better place, along with an equitable settlement… which I’ll help you to both craft and justify.
